UPDATE!

You now use 10 stamina per try. You can catch at most 1 fish per try. To have a 100 % chance of catching a fish, your skill must be 80+ (and use the fisherman for a further +20 bonus). With luck and patience skill, you can lower this requirement.

With 21 fishing skills, fisherman helper +20, and +5 luck, I had 46 % chance of catching a fish last time I tried (roughly 21 stamina per fish).

You can catch a mermaid. It's a very slim chance though. First, you must encounter the mermaid. Then, you can try to catch her or let her go. When you DO encounter a mermaid though, it's quite a bit exciting (at least for a dwarf!)

Mood gain: You will get 1 mood point for every fishing attempts (so, 1 mood per 10 stamina spent).

Fishing potions: They add +2 chance per quality of the potoin to catching a fish during a fishing session (if you use 10 or 200 stamina in one go, it still adds +2 per quality, maximum of 12). You also have 0.1% x quality increased chance of catching a mermaid. It is really not worth it to use fishing potions, because you will use a lot more stamina to just make the potions than what you get in return. On top of that, you will need herbs. Just stay away from the fishing potions if you're a rational fisherman.
