Missing Horse Bug

I believe my horse has somehow deserted me... it took 2 stamina for every movement on the road I had today, so I figure its either a bug or I'm very very unlucky. If I remember correctly you could see your cheap horse as a possession by clicking on your chest, the game no longer shows me possessing a cheap horse, also I no longer have any followers.
My guess to how this bug happened is I completed the Ludovicus quest my horse either left me when Ludovicus began to follow me or when I went to the Grail Monestary and he stopped following me.
