Umberlee did not mind the further they got from the walls.  She was not naive enough to underestimate the dangers, but she was not new to travel either.  She had been in a few scraps, fought against a few dangerous animals and survived already.  She hoped her goose would make the trip without issues, and part of her was curious to see how their adventure would lay.

It wasn't too long before they were surrounded with only nature and the wild vines of the floor.  She knew so many but she did not share that information as of yet.  Though she did stop to gather some strong wet vines that she braided into a long leash as they walked.  She slipped it over Iwins neck, and even when he did not seem to like it too much, even he adapted as they went along.

It was Umberlee who spotted the small field of wild lavender and she grew excited. It was such a wonderful relaxing scent and it was such a beautiful flower to make teas and oils with.  She and Iwin ran ahead and instantly she was on her knees snagging some of the flowers for her satchel.

Marcus was no coward to any standards... except perhaps when it came to people of the opposite gender that he just found impossible to figure out most of the time. Still here he clearly was on guard, more so than Umberlee, and not for imaginary reasons. Everyone knew the world was dangerous and a lot of people that wandered out the city gate wouldn't return healthy, if they returned at all.

Still it was good to see Umberlee get excited for the field of wild flowers and to watch her run over. Marcus himself walked more careful, taking in their surroundings. "We will stay here for a while." He decided, giving her the time to get some of the flowers and to get some rest as well.

She only looked up when he spoke and continued to enjoy gathering a good amount of one of her favorite scents and flowers.  She loved all sorts of things wild, and growing and one could easily forget the dangers beyond the walls of town here.  After a bit of time, she joined him, and opened the bag with foods and offered him some.  "What exactly are we hoping to do, just enjoy the dangerous of the unknown? Go looking for trouble?" she asked him while taking a small piece of bread for her and Iwin who settled on the ground next to Umberlee.

"Something like that." Marcus said, although the way she put it might make it sound like not the best idea. "We will spend some time out in the nature, trying to gather as many rare herbs as we can find and if that is all that happens... ok. But chances are that we find tracks of bandits and then we can try to gather as much information as we can so we can inform others."

Perhaps they could capture one bandit, but he doubted it was a good idea to set that as a goal. Bandits never were alone, or just in pairs. And more than a pair was troublesome even when she clearly had skills fighting. They would see what happened... that was his plan... and he hoped it would result in them getting a bit closer and more trusting of each other.

Umberlee felt satisfied from the small meal she had.  She had offered Marcus some as well, and even fed her bird.  The day was beautiful, but most days were, trouble and nervousness never really showed its face until the sun was long gone and the moon held control of the skies.  She spend most of the rest of the day training her bird, and collecting different herbs from around the location.  She loved doing this, and loved how peaceful the world really could be.

Marcus knew he had little idea of how to get closer with his squire or how really to deal with her being a girl. Had she been a male he might just have had an endless training with her as men understood the way of the sword better than a woman would ever. And had she been a woman it might have been easier too, but he couldn't help but see her as a girl most of the time. Young, innocent, inexperienced.

Of course there were times she proved him wrong with that image, but then he saw her interact with her goose and immediately the image was back. Someone that cared so much for an animal would be very hard to train to become a knight. "Let's train again." Marcus spoke and good the wooden sword again.

She had no idea Marcus saw her as so young.  She was young aye, but her age was beyond her number.  She had much experience with life, and with her own choices and those chosen for her.  She never came off as young to many, and of course when it came to time with Iwin, it was her heart that lead.  She loved most animals, most living things.  She cared about a lot and her endearing tenderness was a quality she enjoyed but rarely shared.

She was enjoying the day much with the gentle breeze and warmth of sun just hinting that nice days were upon them more steadily.  Which was a blessing as the winter was the worst time for all things.

Marcus spoke and held the sword and she sighed inside.  It wasn't exactly what she had wanted to do, but of course he was her "Knight" and she would show him some respect by not questioning his intentions to spar right now further.  She had contemplated telling him a little about her knowledge of herbs and flowers, but that was forgotten.  He really was an awkward man, and she wondered why he had not the greatest social skills.

"Do you have many friends Marcus?" she asked as she picked up the sword and took ready stance. "I mean you seem very quiet and you dinnae share much, do you have anyone that loves you?" she meant it honestly, "a mother, a father? A sister anyone?" she was ready for him to attack, and she even left her hair down long this time.  He wanted to spar, she would give him a spar. "I know you look at me funny for talking to Iwin, but he has a beating heart, and I have a friend in your house already, do you?" she narrowed her eyes and answered any attack he brought to her. She wanted to learn about him, and wanted to test him as he would test her she was sure of it....

Marcus was ready to begin the spar when she spoke and lowered his arm again. Friendship had always been a hard thing on him. He was raised in a manner that made the ones of his age be more of rivals than friends. And he was not much of a talker, he did what needed to be done but it was doubtful that his actions would be remembered.

The shake of his head was small but impossible to miss. He didn't even know himself if he had wanted to answer the question or that it was an unintentional move of his head. "I do my best to make them proud... and friends, I am sure that I have some." He said. There were some people in town that were suited to share a drink with, but none that would help him when he asked for it.

He was strong and yet right now it was easy to see the pain of being alone. Even having a goose like Iwin felt like more than he had in life.

Umberlee took a blow, but it wasn't one of the sword. Wooden or not.  She could be seen softening as he spoke, and though her arms did not move from ready, if he had gone forward to attack he would have knocked her clear off her feet. Of this she was sure.  For the first time, she saw a rawness of him, and instead of seeing it as a weakness, she saw it as a strength.  "Why is it you show a pain to the questions? Why is being alone such a bad thing? It protects you, as it does shelter you from the bad that seems to breed more then good." she reached forward, lifted his arm that held the wooden sword.  "I am sure your parents are proud. They have raised a Knight, one that puts values of...." she paused and shrugged, "are we going to fight?" she loosely knocked his sword with her own and pushed forward, "I have no friends, none but Iwin, that is enough for me. Everytime I make a friend they break trust. It is a wall of falseness friendships. Most use you for gain.. their own gain." she was getting frustrated, "Fight Marcus!! Ye wanted to spar! So come on ye yellow bellied trout fight!" she pushed him further, "Get yourself into it, get the feeling I saw in yer eyes at how alone ye really be.. ye aren't alone now, ye have a woman before ye. A woman that will not stand down and one that is none going te go away, even when it is perhaps the wisest thing te do!!" now she went after him, giving him no choice but to answer her attack or he would hold bruises of flesh for a weeks time surely.  She held nothing back, but took her own hurts and angers of life and the pain of his small shake of head into each and every hit of her weapon.  She would show him passion right here, right now in the middle of their 'trip'

Iwin really showed his displeasure to the attack with his wings flapping, his sounds trumpeting loudly at them and his dancing around wildly, from a safe distance to the dangerous Umberlee and Marcus...

For the first time she really seemed to speak to him. Different from all the simple things they had said or left unspoken. He countered her attack and fought back, but it really wasn't her he was fighting. Instead he was battling his demons, one swing at a time.

Perhaps he was not a good knight and would he never be remembered for the things he did in life or for the way he would die some time, but he was a great fighter. Fighting was more honest than people at times were, Umberlee was not the only one to have learned that lesson. But perhaps it was his experience or age, but he was troubled by the lack of people in his life. The lack of purpose other than to be a knight. The best battles were won, not for own pride or own gain, but for loved ones. And how did one do such a thing without having loved ones.

But he was a great fighter. The other day he had put Umberlee to a test with their spar but at the same time he had held back. Not a lot, but just the little that one held back when there was no truth in the fight. This time he didn't fight to train, he didn't fight to win, he fought to survive. He didn't think, he just acted. But one who would expect that to result in sloppy attacks was very wrong. He might not be in control in the normal sense of the word, but his arm and sword were very controlled

He was stronger then her, and if this was a battle of two foes, in the end he could have bested her with strength alone.  She did not like knowing this and she would soon begin training harder for her strength.  She was not a fool or young enough kitten to know that she was at her best.

Marcus did not answer her, he did not speak to her. She had found a rawness of him, exposed it further, and now she took answer for the stripping of his shield.  It was how battles were won or lost.  She had not meant to find such a strong passion of vulnerability, but she had uncovered a beast.

She continued to taunt, now her face and form were showing signs of exhaustion, already, as she was forced to answer each deepening barrage of his sword.  Her hair was a nuisance and yet, she took it as a chance to use it to her advantage and learn.  A foe would not care if her hair was down, if it distracted her, it would be advantage for him.

She moved just once, to push the long raven wave of hair that stuck to her forehead and that is when Marcus hit her forearm with the sword.

She cried out, from the swift sharp pain, and she dropped down to end to the spar.  If it had been a real weapon, her arm would no longer be hers, instead, for now it immediately swelled and she held it close.

No tears fell, but they threatened and that could be seen in her eyes. She breathed hard and fast, and anger was more dominating then pain....

Marcus had just acted, not thinking but just on instinct and training. There had been little thought about his opponent, about gender or skill. It took him moments before he realized something was wrong and it was not the injury on her arm that made him notice. It was what was in her gaze.

It was not the pain or the threat of tears, instead it was a link or connection of sorts. He saw the strength in her eyes and that replaced her youthful age and in a way her gender, while at the same time he became more aware of her gender.

The fight stopped and with care he took her arm, not really touching it as he held it and studied it. "I... I am sorry... I don't know... what came over me." He apologized. He was sweating as the fight had been rather intense, but that was less of a concern now than the swelling of her arm.

He looked up from her arm to her eyes and once again he was very aware of her beauty that he was blind for so often. If he didn't worry so much about her arm, he would immediately have stopped his touch.

Umberlee could feel her fingertips tingle, she moved them reassuring to herself that it indeed was not broken, but a mere bruise that seemed to run as deep as flesh and bone allowed.  She dared to look at it, and already it was dark in colour and swollen to the size of a half an orange.  She heard his words, and his apology was unneeded and as he held her arm she let out a long shaky deep breath of pain.

"Yer demons have company with my demons but we should agree that our demons should not best us." she simply stated, standing now, and wincing as she brought her arm first upwards to move her hair, then downwards as the first movement did not yet agree.

"I would like to rest a bit now please." she asked, moving to where the food and drinks were.  The fight had taken a better part of half an hour, and the day was running on borrowed time to the night.

She looked through her bag, and found an herb she had already with her, and she took some of the dirt from the earth and rubbed it on the arm.  She almost felt sick with the pain, but the only way there would be admission of that is the pale colour of her face and skin.

Instantly Iwin came and laid next to her sitting form, and she smiled gently.  It was good to have an unconditional love.  A love that was without demands or expectations, save common kindness and return.

Marcus nodded to her comment of their demons. "I guess so." He spoke and didn't interfere when she moved away for some rest. While she applied some herb to her bruise, Marcus looked around at the flowers and herbs himself. He might not have reacted to the lavender, but he knew a thing or two about herbs himself.

Not that he had any idea how to make potions to give people extra energy or anything complicated as that, but he had no trouble finding a herb he had hoped to see. He gathered a few leaves and then walked over to Umberlee, still a bit upset about how easy he had lost control. "Here, chew this. It helps with the pain, but don't swallow it." He said and offered the leaves to her.

In his time as Squire he had received enough injuries to know a bit about pain medication. And also knew how powerful the leaves worked as laxative when swallowed. Something his knight hadn't warned him about the first time.

Umberlee accepted the herbs he offered and knew what they did if they were swallowed.  She was glad though he was nice enough to mention it.  "I am fine, I can handle pain. This is the kind of pain that has purpose." she thanked him also but put what he gave her into a bag.  The throbbing would remain for a few days but it wasn't so bad.

Then again, it became an awkward silence between them.  Though now they both could claim a bit more knowledge of the other, it was still Iwin that held Umberlees affection and attention most.

By the end of the rest period Iwin and Umberlee were practicing their own tricks and training. Umberlee would wait for Marcus to suggest to move, or do something else before making any more contact with him.  Though even when she didn't speak to him, she was oddly enough thinking about him.

A cold gust of wind made Marcus shiver a bit and he looked at the sky. He hoped it wasn't too early in the year to wander outside the city walls as the nights were still rather long and cool. Soon it would be completely dark, but it was a full moon since some ability to see was needed. Perhaps they had half an hour longer, maybe an hour, so he wondered if they should stay here for the night or find a more sheltered spot.

As he watched Iwin and Umberlee he came to his decision. "Let us see if we can find a better spot for the night. It isn't going to rain but some shelter against the wind will be wise." They both had a blanket of their own, but unless they wanted to sleep against each other they would need some protection from the wind.

A new Squire [Closed to Umberlee] - Page 5 Empty Re: A new Squire [Closed to Umberlee]

Post by Umberlee Mon Mar 23, 2015 10:50 am

As night fell, they managed to find a place that was some sheltered.  Though both clearly were not entirely happy with it, Umberlee perhaps most.   The night brought a nervousness to the area, and even to her.  She was not scared by any means, having spent more then her fair share of nights under the stars, but perhaps most anxious by the man that was close to her in the small over hang of rocks and brush they had discovered.

Of course, they could not have a fire set for all night hours, as it would be a clear invitation to night crawlers human and animal alike.  But she could help him set up some small flames that could die down to hot coals which would aid in warmth.   They had some small talk, as it was impossible to do without that between them.

As the sun left forevermore for that day, the moon rose, and the stars danced.  It could not be any more beautiful of a setting, and if there was not dangerous that lurked, it could almost be romantic.  Umberlee studied her arm, disappointed at how sore it appeared.  She would be careful to rest on it tonight, and when the time came to sleep, the awkwardness of closeness would not be avoided.

That time came after meal and set up, and Umberlee and Marcus both retired to the small protection of the over hang of rocks and brush.  She knew the two of them would be close, and thankfully for her sake, there was a goose that could go between them both.

"He will help keep us more warm then we will him." she said with obvious nervousness.  She had never ever been this close to a man at sleeping hour before in her life, and Marcus could easily see upon her a innocence that no one had ever gotten to witness before.

Even with the goose watching over Umberlee as a guard, they ended up sleeping rather close. She was right that Iwin offered them both some warmth, but Marcus was still very aware of the warmth her body offered. It took him a bit before he fell asleep but once he did it as a dreamless sleep.

As they slept they got closer and closer together and when he woke, Iwin was resting on the other side of Umberlee while his arm was under Umberlee's neck. She slept close against him, using each others body for warmth. He was the first to wake but the startle of finding her so close against him, woke her up as well.

Umberlee had been surprised when he did not complain about Iwin being between them both.  Though she was happy for the bird and distance, she too found it a bit difficult to sleep.  She told herself it was the pain of her arm, nothing more then that, and the nervousness about being outside on such a cold night.  Though the cold would ensure a safer night.

As the night deepened, so did her sleep, and though she did not remember it when she woke with a startle, she did have a dream of him.  A dream which was perhaps for the better to not remember considering the rush of emotions that soar through her on this rather hasty waking.

"W...What...what are you doing????" she pushed him away as if it was his fault, and she instantly sat up, and startled Iwin, who squawked his annoyance as well.  She flustered further, and brushed her long hair out of her face, and quickly moved as far from him as she could.  Though with the warmth they had given each other throughout the night, she was shivering swiftly because of the coolness of the mornings air and dew.

She couldn't seem to stop shivering and even when she stole her blanket back Marcus and Umberlee could tell it was not a really odd thing they had found each other this past cold night.

Marcus shivered too from the cold now their bodies did not offer warmth to each other any longer. He couldn't blame her reaction as he had been startled too, and she was a woman and prone to overreact. "It might be best to have a quick breakfast and then continue our exploration, we will warm from the walk." He suggested although walking wouldn't offer the same kind of warmth as being close together.

"Perhaps you can see if you can find some berries and mushrooms that are safe to eat while I work on our breakfast?" Knowing the way she was with Iwin, it might be best if she was not present to see him catch and kill a rabbit and hopefully she would eat it once it was already dead. At the same time, he already imagined her screaming for his cruelness.

Umberlee could have argued further, but she did not.  The idea of her going to get some berries was a very good one to her as it meant she could move away from this spot, and the uncomfortableness and awkwardness of their evening and surprising morning.  She made a soft sound and Iwin followed her and before long she was far away from him and the overhang that they called bed for the night.

There were all sorts of berries to be found if one looked, but not all were safe to consume. Luckily for them both she did know the difference, and before an hour passed, she had the bottom of her shirt holding a vast variety of red and dark berries, and mushrooms as well as some greens.  She wondered what he would prepare for them both, but her mind was too much focused on the way they woke together, and how it really wasn't as horrible as it seemed to be next to a man.  In fact, had it been any other man it might well be enjoyable, as would the continuation of warming each other.

The blush was still on her cheeks when she returned.

Marcus had managed to catch a rabbit and had prepared it by the time she found him again. He had made a little fire, only large enough to cook and not really offering much warmth. Luckily the meat no longer looked anything like a bunny or he feared she would start a new argument.

"Very good" He said with a smile when she returned, but he had been very sure she would do a good job at it. "We will eat for a while and then continue to move further away from town. The herbs we look for grow deeper into the forest." Of course the deeper they got in the forest, the more the dangers would grow.

A new Squire [Closed to Umberlee] - Page 5 Empty Re: A new Squire [Closed to Umberlee]

Post by Umberlee Wed Mar 25, 2015 10:25 pm

Umberlee and Iwin sat together, while Marcus served them. Well, the humans anyway.  She shared as she did always with her goose, and nothing more was spoken of the morning experience of awakening together.  She was probably thinking about it far too much as it was, but she comforted herself by reminder herself it was the very closest she had ever been to a man, and well bodies craved closeness, and it was perfectly normal to feel the comfort and protection she did.  That is what a man was suppose to do. Comfort, protect, honour, and love.  Only of course the last one was far from what was between Knight and Squire.

Iwin stood and waddled off, and Umberlee paid no mind to him as she enjoyed the meal and even the meat.  She did not ask, nor did she want to know.  It wasn't fish, but she was sure she was not gone long enough for it to be anything of upsetting importance.

She had her fill of berries, and what Marcus offered her, truly enjoying the taste.  Hunger was a dangerous beast, and she seemed to crave a lot of breakfast this morning.  "I dinnae know what you did or made, but it was very good.  Thank you." She rose and excused herself as nature took its course now.

Umberlee made sure she moved far enough in the brush that he could not hear her when she used the forest floor for natures call.  She was sure she was safe enough away, and as she did so Iwin joined her, and she let out a blood curling scream!

It was absolutely disgusting, what Iwin had found, he was covered in blood and dragged a fur matted mess towards her as proud as a peacock would be.  She nearly fell over trying to get away from him and the carcass of their breakfast.  A mess of bones, blood and matted fur would haunt her for a long long time.  As would the bloody mess of her goose, who seemed to not know why she screamed so!!

Although it was very clear why Umberlee disappeared into the safety of the nature, Marcus still rushed over once he heard her scream. Perhaps she had come across something dangerous, human or animal kind. Or perhaps she had hurt herself in a manner that she no longer could walk. Luckily it took long enough to get to her that she had long enough to make herself fully decent again.

He was startled to see the bloody mess of goose and it took him a bit to realize what had happened. Slowly the pieces came together. "Awww, you poor thing. Let me see what I can do about that." A few days ago Marcus wouldn't have imagined talking to an animal and had he realized right now that he did so, he would have rolled his eyes.

Carefully he removed some of the dead rabbit that Iwin apparently had come across, getting his fingers rather dirty and as Iwin really didn't stay still for it, it would take some time. "Perhaps it is best to find you some water." He said when it was clear he only got the worst bits out but still had a monstrous looking goose.

A new Squire [Closed to Umberlee] - Page 5 Empty Re: A new Squire [Closed to Umberlee]

Umberlee had indeed time to make herself decent, and yet at the very moment she was so focused on the sight before she really doubted she would have cared if he walked in on her naked!!!  There before her, like some blood crazed war had taken place between two animals was her pet and what she only could assume had been breakfast!!!

Umberlee's mind was far too in shock at everything, and she trembled greatly from upset.  She had opened her mouth to say something, surely not very nice to Marcus, but when he spoke to Iwin and seemed to genuinely care for her pet she couldn't find one word to speak.

Her heart was still pounding crazily in her chest, and her entire face softened from rage and horror to a curious shock.  "Aye, water... but I feel ill." she did look rather white, and she just walked right past Marcus and Iwin and headed back towards the small little camp that they had made.

There she sat staring silently into the dying flames of the fire, perhaps more confused at what had happened to her Knight then what had become of her goose.

Marcus watched as Umberlee walked back to the remains of the fire and then at the goose. It was difficult to decide what he should do, but knowing Umberlee she wouldn't need or want his help. So instead he explored the surroundings a bit, knowing there had to be water nearby.

By the time they returned to Umberlee Iwin was mostly clean again and seemed rather happy to 'run' over to his friend again. Marcus was slower to follow, once again not sure how to act or what to say. Women were difficult creatures.
