rp from here

It was bitterly cold night. Strange, as the day had been so pleasant. But things around these parts were never as they seemed. The coach rocked side to side as the horses pulled through the forest. Only gentle mutters could be heard in the night, coming from the coachman, offering gentle words to keep the horses calm. Joseph slept soundly inside. He wasn't fond on this way of travel, but when his Father sent him places he had no choice but to use the family coachman. His brown leather boots were very worn for a noble. Unexplainable? Perhaps. But then, everything can be explained in one way or another. He was smartly dressed. Immaculate clothes as if newly bought. His cloak wrapped around him and aided his peaceful sleep.

Just as dawn was breaking he woke. The town of Spero was now in sight and Joseph was to stop at the first inn he came across. This would be his base for his visit here. He was to stay for a month before returning so he was eager to find the place soon sohe could settle in. Joseph jumped out of the coach as the horses pulled to a stop. He brushed down his clothes and straightened his cloak. Nodding to the coachman Joseph walked inside.

The warmth was most welcome. He glanced around but saw no one. So he walked over to the large desk at one end of the room and waited patiently. Letting his eyes fall over the surroundings. This seemed a pleasant place.

Airy made her way from the kitchen where the pleasant smell of bread freshly baking should of followed her. Worry at her brow, no wheat yet, and there was only so many ways to make eggs not taste like eggs. Yawning a little, she'd had a late night and was once again up with the Larks. Time to attend some business in the front room before walking by the market to check on the way to her field. She would sow it herself today, even if it would be slower with only one arm, she comforted herself that it was easier than ploughing.

Hiding a larger yawn behind her free hand, the baby was sometimes disturbing her nights now with incessant kicking, no matter how she tried to soothe it. The ache in her arm also kept her from a truly comfortable sleep at all. Her yawn took her all the way through the rear door of the reception room and she was almost about to sit down at the front desk when she shot up again. She had completely missed the new arrival who was now all but filling up her vision. Blinking widely in surprise, for some reason she glanced past him looking for what who new. Blushing a little she gave him a weak smile "I'm so very sorry, I didnt see you there."

Her eyes took in the stranger almost completely hidden in his rich red cloak, his stance seemed cooly confident and commanding..the cut of his clothes noted him as a man of means. Airy was glad, this would be her first guest and it looked like no hardships would cause him to be tardy in his keep. She didnt notice that he was very handsome, nor, in another circumstance that she would find the stranger apealing. The reality of her situation made such contemplations far from her mind lately. Her existence and that of her babies future rested squarely on her shoulders, Her fathers words screaming at her 'no man would want another mans child!' and since her own father could so easily give his actual child up, it had done nothing to dissuade her that he was not correct.

So perhaps her eyes took in such a handsome man, but her thoughts were only upon the transaction between them that was surely to occur. Recovering from her fluster, gave him a sweet smile "I would be guessing that perhaps you'd like a room Sir?"

Just as Joseph was about to take a seat he heard the sound of a door, within the building, move open. The smell of food drifting into the room before any figure did. Joseph inhaled the aroma and smiled. He was hungry, but more tired. Then to the left walked a woman busy in her thoughts. Hair of crimson envy and skin giving the finest porcelain a challenge. He watched her sit down and so he took a step forwards. She looked tired and he winced a little in hope that his arrival had not woken her this early.

She clearly had not seen him, for she jumped back out of her seat within moments of sitting. Joseph smiled at her as his eyes quickly fell over her. She was clearly with child and her arm seemed to be injured. What an interesting combination. What could one do, that pregnant, to injure their arm.

Joseph walked forwards, so that he was standing infront of the desk. She was young, maybe 17 or 18 he wasn't sure but she had a very charming smile framed by her bright hair. Joseph decided surely someone that was with child and running an establishment such as this, surely had a husband sleeping upstairs. This mattered not to him, as he was here on business not some romantic vacation.

"I would be guessing that perhaps you'd like a room Sir?"

Joseph smiled. Yes my Lady. If you have the room that is. He bowed his head slightly. My name is Mr. Callaghan.... Joseph Callaghan. I wish to stay for around a months moons if that suits you well. He waited in hope that his stay in Spero would not be moving from place to place for his sleep and that his whole stay could be here.

Joseph Callaghan..Airy nodded.."A nice name.." blushing when she realised she said it out loud, what the devil had got into her, what did it matter a mans name. Speaking quickly. "A month." her smile widened "That will suit us fine..uh.." Airy looked around, a little trying to remember what she was supposed to do next. Her first guest..quickly, what came next.."Oh!.."realising she said that a little loud too and flushing more. "Oh" she said more sedately before taking a seat and pushing the registery to him and indicating a quill. "If you would just fill this in Mr Callaghan, I will take a deposit now and you may opt to pay weekly or well weekly really, its how we are set up". Airy frowns a little she had only worked out a weeks lodgings, not a months..how much would that be. Surely she should offer him some sort of rate for so long a stay.. "Let me just work out what that will be."

Her green eyes appeal to his for patience, before bending her head and scribbling some notes with her one available hand.

Joseph smiled as she complimented his name. It had clearly, slipped out, judging by the flush in her once pale cheeks. She had said that will suit "us" fine. So Joseph was correct in thinking there was a slumbering husband upstairs. She pushed the ledger over to him and he picked the quill up and twirled it between his fingers as he read over the questions. Leaning low on the desk he filled in the form andthen placed the quill back down.

As she scribbled away trying to do the figures she stopped to look up at him. Emerald eyes stared at him and he smiled. He placed a hand on hers to stop her writing.
Joseph pulled out a leather coin bag from his cloak pocket. Also another condition from his Father for travelling. He slid the bag over to her so that she could take the correct amount out. Looking back down to her arm he could not help but ask.

I do not believe your name has fallen on my ears yet my Lady but my I ask, what was the cause of your injured arm?

His hand on Airy's made her catch her breathe for a moment, her eyes flickered once more to his face, she realised that no one had touched her in any fashion really since she had left her Fathers house and her sisters had held her tightly. It felt...nice. She was sad when he took it away and pushed a bag of coins to her. She eyed it, the fine leather and stitching, the casual disregard of handing a stranger his money, and not even bothering to count it out and confirmed her thoughts that he was a man of means. She wondered why such a man was in Spero, but she also kept her curiousity to herself.

Her hand untied the pouch a little clumsily..and she dipped her small hand in and counted out the required fee. She had decided on a discount for so long a time so took only what she needed for the entire month, she assumed that thats what he wanted her to do.

Unlocking a drawer in the desk she placed the coins in a compartment, before locking it back up when he asked her name. Her face dropping a little, some hostess she was.."Oh I beg your pardon" she would not tell him she was new at this and he was her first customer, but she almost wished she could. Standing she gave a small curtsey and her hand in greeting "Airy Aventia.." She usually said daughter of...but she could not, so it left a pause until her mind searched for a way to fill it. Looking down. "Im afraid I just moved here, and the journey was fraught with wild animals, I mistook a gentle Bambi for less than the wild beast it was, so it butted me and I landed awkwardly breaking my arm."

Joseph logged her name in his mind. For it would be terribly rude to forget your host's name. He smiled as he took his slightly lighter coin purse back and slid it int his cloak pocket. Joseph had a genuine look of concern on his face as she told of her ordeal. It sounds terrible Airy. Especially when it was not just you it threw. He glanced down at her stomach quickly. Well I slept most of the way here so i did not see such things. Perhaps I was blessed with a lukcy route. However i was hoping to have reached here a little sooner. He glanced out the window. The sun was now making its way into the sky and morning was upon them. I was hoping for some sleep before i started my day. He smiled. Never mind. I would like to drop my things into my room and then if you could direct me to the best place for breakfast I would be grateful

He picked up the luggage by his feet and stood politely, awaiting her to lead the way to his room.

Airy's hand smoothed where his eyes had glanced, remembering waking up in the Apothecarthy's terrified and babbling asking about the baby, and the flooding relief she felt when she was told all was well.

Smoothing down the skirt of her dress she skirted the desk stepping toward the stairs. "If you will follow me..oh" Stretching back she snagged a key from the counter wall. Keeping her face averted, could she look anymore inept today. Taking a deep breath she lifted her skirts and lead her guest up the stairs. Deciding to be all business and answering his query "The Town Bistro is in the town square, if you head right once you leave the house then take a left into Capone Boulevarde you'll see a large round building. Its the town Bistro. I'm on my own here and have a field and animals to attend to otherwise I'd prepare the meals for you myself. Perhaps when I can hire someone a little later on" She threw an apologetic look over her shoulder.

He hadnt said anything, infact hadnt even acted like it was a problem, it was Airy's own, she knew most Hostels provided meals, but she just could not and so she found herself explaining anyway. Pushing open a door at the top of the stairs, she left the key inside the lock. Stepping back she let him enter to the view of a pristine and clean room done in muted browns and greens..she hoped he thought it a room for a man as she had, when she first decided. The large bed with its feather matress would also be fitting for a noble, for she had an idea even if he had not said, that he was one. "I hope you enjoy your stay, the uh..kitchen is at your disposal once you get more settled. The curtains are heavy if you really did feel the need for a rest. It should provide some darkness." She frowned at the curtains hoping she was right.

Joseph walked up the stairs behind her, chuckling silently as she leant back past him to grab the key. He stayed a few steps behind her so as not to stand on her trailing skirt. As she spoke of the Town Bistro he followed her directions in his mind so that he would remember them once he was outside. Joseph didn't say anything. There was no need, Airy's voice filled the silence and it was a pleasant sound to hear. They reached the top of the stairs and she placed the key into the lock and turned it smoothly. Stepping inside, he put his bags down on the floor. Turning slowly he looked at the room. Perfectly formed and tidy. He had spent so many nights away from home. Set out on his Father's business and he had stayed in some awful places. This was not one though. He glanced at the curtains as she mentioned a sleep.

He wondered what time it was. He wasn't to meet this man until late afternoon so he supposed a good rest would fit in before then. Thankyou Airy, I think i shall sleep a little before heading to the bistro. He walked back towards her, standing in the doorway. He took her hand losely and kissed it softly. He had been brought up with the utmost respect and guidance in manners and etiquette. I am very pleased. You have a lovely place here. He stretched out his arms and yawned looking forward to having sleeping in a bed for the first time in three days.

Airy stood at the door unmoving for the longest moment after he had released her hand and he had stretched. Something odd had just happened, A slight frown creased her brows. Without answering him she walked out and closed the door behind her, as if she had already forgotten he was there.

Walking down the stairs she paused at the bottom to look back up her hand pressed hard just beneath her breast to where her heart might just be racing a little faster than it should. "Oh.." her eyes widened and stared at nothing.

Shaking herself, she went to get her corn seed to sow at her field.

Story continued in stories and tales forumSwaying Gently, swaying slow..

Joseph awoke, after a lengthly sleep. He felt very refreshed. Pouring some water from his flask into the small basin in the room, he began to wash. The plan was always for him to take on his Father's work but now that he was at home injured Joseph had taken on most of the work much earlier than he thought. After 30 years of life he was an expert in selling shares of his Father's many estates but today he wasn't in the mood. He sighed. The meeting was already set, the client was waiting, so another day of wishfull dreaming whilst he partook in the sale.

He left his room, locking to door behind him and placing the brass key into his pocket. His red cloak was neatly wrapped around him. For some reason he was hoping Airy would still be in the reception room. But she was not. Shrugging the thought off as just a polite guesture he walked outside the building and turned right, in search of the bistro before his meeting. Discussing businees was one thing. Doing it on an empty stomach, just unthinkable.

Airy returned to the hostel just in time to meet the market seller dropping off her lone bag of wheat. They took it to the rear shed together, he'd refused an offer of a cup of tea, claiming the wife watched the clock each night to see him home in time. Smiling Airy had let him go and possibly not too reluctantly either if truth be told. The bending and sowing had taken its toll on her, even if it was supposed to be the easiest part of the field work.

Sighing and her shoulders drooping as soon as she closed the world out behind her, by shutting the rear door of the house, she walked down the rear hall towards the kitchen...rubbing the small of her back, she contemplated forgoing a meal that night. It wasnt possible though, she was not just looking after herself. However, she thought a short rest in the sitting room would do wonders before facing anything more tonight. Pushing through the doorway to the sitting room Airy chose her favourite chair near the unlit fire..and rested her head back...she would just close her eyes for a moment. Then, remembering her guest, she would find the strength to start the fire too.

Joseph's day had been long, but he had succeeded in achieving another share holder, this time on an ever fruitfull orchard on his Father's main estate. He was hungry, the bistro was nice and the food delicious but it would be closed now. He spotted the last of the market stalls packing up and ran over to them. A small woman was stuffing bread into a basket. Joseph cleared his throat. Excuse me but may I take the bread and pork from your hands. He held out a handful of silver coins. Much more than the food was worth. The woman's face lit up and she shoved the bread and pork at him. Please Sir take some potatoes to for that amount of silver you may have 6 aswell. Joseph did not argue but instead offered another silver coin for a basket to carry it back to the hostel in.

He wandered back to the hostel. Reaching the door he pushed it open. The reception room was empty but he was headed to the kitchen. It must be through one of these doors he thought to himself. Pushing one open he saw Airy asleep in an armchair. He put his basket down and tiptoed over to her. There was a thick woolen blanket folded over the arm of the chair. He picked it up and opened it fully. Then he carefully covered her and moved back to his basket. Picking it up, he walked through another door and found the kitchen. Right, he took off his cloak and rolled up the sleeves on his crisp white shirt.

There was a bricked circle near an open window. It had embers still burning and an empty spit standing above it. Joseph slid the chunks of pork onto the spit and bent low to provoke the fire to burn again. As it spat and crackled away he found a knife and began peeling the potatoes. They were put in a cauldron of boiling water next to the pork and left to soften. He sat down on a small seat next to the fire and turned the spit half heartedly as his mind wandered off.

The warmth of the blanket prevented the cold from penetrating Airy's sleep..and so rather than wake up after a little while...Airy slipped into a deeper slumber, such as she had not had for weeks. The awkwardness of her position no match at all against the bodies need for rest.

Joseph was snapped back to reality then the sounds of the potato water bubbling over onto the floor echoed in the room. He grabbed a cloth and picked up the hot handle of the cauldron. Giving the pork a poke, it was also done. He glanced at it and scolded himself for buying too much food. At home he ate what he wanted and gave no thought to where the food went but now looking at all the waste he felt awful. He remembered Airy was sleeping in the next room. Perhaps she had woken and gone to bed. He peeped round the door. She was still there, sleeping peacefully. He decided to plate up two dinners incase she had not eaten yet. If she had, he guessed he would find someone begging the streets and give it to them. Though by the looks of the amount of food there was probably enough to do both.

He put a piece of bread on each plate. Then with one in each hand he used his back to push the door open. Sitting the plates down he walked over to Airy. Slightly worried at what her husband would think if he caught Joseph touching her. He looked down at her. She was a very pretty young thing. Looks that most could have the world with. To delicate to use them though. He smiled and then remembered the husband. He put his arm on hers gently so as not to startle her and moved it slowly to wake her up.

Airy, I have an extra plate of food if you have not yet eaten.

Coming awake with eyes wide open "The fire!" burst from her lips before she was fully conscious. Blinking owlishly up at Joseph.."Oh.." she said dissapionted. "Your here and I havent started the fire. Im sorry, you must think Im a terrible hostess."

Going to get up she found a blanket in her way..her look of confusion cleared after a little thought. Blushing gently to have obviously been caught sleeping and long enough for him to have placed a blanket on her, she pushed it off her knee's and stood up. "Uh thank you for the blanket" She didnt quiet look at him. Perhaps she was bound to be a goof around this man for some reason. Pretty soon she'd be sneaking about trying to avoid him if she couldnt get control of herself.

Pushing her tousled red hair out of her eyes her nose caught an aroma she had not smelt for ages.."Pork" she breathed. Her eyes got a little soft..smiling she looked for the source of the smell and saw the table with two plates..her eyes swivelled to his. "Pork is very rare here lately...you were lucky to get some at all." The second plate was obviously for her and she recalled someone speaking to her through her dream state, it must not of been a dream but his voice asking her to join him. Feeling a little forward still she opened her mouth and forced the words out. Hoping he had indeed invited her to dinner, she'd die of shame if she had guessed it wrong.

"I'll set the fire first, but thank you, it smells deliscious, I dont think Id forgive myself by refusing." Airy smiled tentatively at him. He was very well built, perhaps it did indeed take two plates to keep him fueled...Oh dear Airy thought, he was probably just waking her up to set the fire..

Airy's sudden outburst made Joseph step back a few paces. He hand't meant to wake her so suddenly. She soon calmed and began muttering about the fire and pork being rare. Joseph smiled at her. He placed the plate onto her lap for her. "you have just woken, let me do the fire, he smiled at her, appearances can be deceiving, i do know how to work. He winked at her and knelt down infront of the sleeping fire. After placing small kindling down and persuading a flame to be born he added larger logs until the air in the room was very warm.

Then he sat down in the chair opposite Airy and began to eat his meal. It had been a long day indeed. But he had plans for the night. So it seemed another day of restless work tomorrow. He took a swig of wine from a flask on his belt and sat quite happily while he finished his meal. Taking the occasional glance at Airy to ensure his cooking had not killed her.

Airy, I wonder,,he looked into nothing trying to form his sentence. I would not ask you to stay up later as it is already well into the night, but I have business to attend to and I would hate to come back and find myself locked out for the night. Is there a key to a back door that I may have just for tonight? I give you my word that I shall return it upon first sighting of you in the morning.

Joseph really hoped she agreed to this as he had already looked out th window in his room and there was indeed, no way to climb up from the outside. He took another sip of his drink and placed his empty plate on the small table infront of him.

Airy sat and watched Joseph light the fire the plate warm on her lap. This was unexpectedly pleasant. It gave a window into what life might of been like had Tristan lived. They'd of been married now, perhaps sitting just like this, she watching the muscles play under his shirt as he made them warm. Perhaps he would turn around rise and place his hands on the arm of her chair and kiss her lips. He turned and Tris..no...Airy shook her head..what was wrong with her. Sitting back her hands took up the knife and fork to hide...what? She said furiously to herself, he couldnt possibly know what she had been thinking.

Joseph did turn, but he walked past her and sat in the chair opposite her. They ate in companionable silence. Her eyes met his every now and then as she caught him looking at her, she smiled over a mouthful of delsciously cooked pork or soft potato. It was a lovely meal and she told him so. In between she tried to puzzle out why she would think of something she had not thought of or realised she had never allowed herself to dream about. From the first moment news of Tristans death had reached her, she had fallen apart then, but her fathers reaction and his subsequent anger when she could no longer hide her condition, then life had been all about survival...there had been no room for dreams. Perhaps that was it, perhaps now, things were starting to calm, her future with even this one guest gave security....or was it. Her eyes strayed to his face again and she could not help but notice he was very handsome and oddly compelling.

Grateful to get away from her troubling thoughts Airy nodded to Joseph with a smile "You seem very nice and how could I pay such hospitality with mistrust..I have a spare key that is yours for as long as you stay here, after all it is by all reckoning your home now as well as my own."

Standing up, she took her plate and held out her hand for his, "let me take these to the Kitchen and then I will see to the key."

Joseph smiled at her and stood as she did. He watched her pick up the plates and move towards the kitchen. He decided to give the fire another poke so it was nice and warm when he got back later. The blaze was warm and felt comforting on his face. He then turned to face the kitchen door. He walked into the kitchen where Airy was placing the plates on the side. While she busied herself there he picked up the cauldron that the potatoeshad been cooking in and tipped the rest of the food into it.

He waited for Airy to finish and lead the way to the whereabouts of the door key.

Placing the plates in the wash bowl she sluiced some water over them and left them to soak, she did not wish to keep him from being about his business, so would return to wash up as soon as she gave him his key. What she could not fathom it could be at such a time at night. But then again her Father had gone out upon occasion as well. Things were different for a man, there was no reason why his business would not be conducted over an evening visit and she was getting entirely too curious about her guest, so she stopped thinking about it.

Once the plates where covered she noted his taking up of the small cauldron, "I have a cool safe if you would like to put it away?"

eerrr. Joseph scratched his head. Yes, of course, He picked up the heavy cauldron and carried it over to the cool safe. Once inside the door was closed and he smiled at Airy. You have a very well set up hostel here Airy. It is clear that you run it well.
He waited for her lead the way to the door key.

It was a little tight in the cool safe with him there..smiling she edged a little back to the door sliding past him. Her hand reaching behind and her face red as she let the latch go and she tumbled hastily out.

Green eyes looking at him.."I'll, I'll go get that key." Spinning on her heel she headed for the front room. Once there she searched a little till she remembered she kept them in the locked draw where she kept the money. Pulling the key from the chain around her kneck she unlocked the draw and found the spare back door key. With a smile she handed it over to him. "There we are, now you can come and go at will."

Joseph followed the trail of her emerald skirt into the other room. When she turned to face him the skirt shimmered brightly and made her eyes look even more precious. He took the key from her delicate hand, their fingers brushing slightly. He smiled at her before putting the key into his pocket.

Now he needed to go to his room before he left, he just prayed that the night was fully upon them so that Airy felt tired enough to go to sleep. If she was still here when he returned, it was no problem, but he would need to find an excuse for his actions. He bowed his head to her. I need a few things from my room but then I shall be off on my business. He smiled to her. I hope you sleep well Airy. Then he headed up the stairs and along to his room. He took out the smaller of the two keys and unlocked the door before heading inside. There was a small bag resting against one wall. He rummaged around in it to make sure everythign was there.

Inside was a thick woolen cloack, much like the one he was wearing. Except this one was not red but black. There were some woven gloves a small dagger and some small change. He emptied the pockets of his cloack, except for the two keys and placed the contents on his bed. Then he headed back down stairs quietly.

Airy had already returned to the kitchen, she made sure the dishes were washed and any bones and left overs she wrapped and would put out the back as she always did for the little stray cat she had found on her first night here. He was getting friendlier each day, he actually stood and waited just around the edge of the house now to see if she was leaving any morsels and didnt run away from her on sight if she caught him sunning during the day. Airy smiled at that thought she'd tame him yet..and figure on a name for him too.

Looking around the kitchen was back to spotless..wiping her hands on the kitchen towel she took up the tin dish and headed for the back door. Stepping out in the cool night air she looked around for the little black and grey cat and there he was, at the edge of the house, his head bobbed up and down and he mewled a little. Grinning she placed the dish down "Alright Mr. Cat..dinner is served, you should like it tonight, its pork...pork you say? Noo I dont believe you've tried it, but I highly recommend it." He took a couple of steps forward, but then stopped and would not go further.."Yes, yes..I'll go now, I promise...bon appetite."

Still with a smile on her face Airy left him to it, it truly was time to sleep again, her cat nap had just seen her through the rest of the night, she rubbed her lower back again, she was almost to the front entrance's rooms rear door, but didnt use it instead she used the door just before it, and entered her appartments..consisting of a small sitting room and bedroom. Somewhere she could come away from guests if there was a need.

Josephs Visit to Spero Empty Re: Josephs Visit to Spero

As he reached the bottom step he saw that Airy was not there. She seemed to stay up awfuly late. Joseph had been brought up to leanr that women could indeed help and do their share but the man was always the one to do the extra work. He had not met Airy's man yet, but from what he had experienced, he did not seem the type Joseph would like. Though he had learnt a long time ago never to judge until you have known someone.

Walking to the kitchen and grabbed the cauldron from the cool safe. He walked back around to the back door and went outside. The night was chilled. Once past the corner he knelt down and put his bag and cualdron on the floor. He slipped his red cloak off silently and pulled out the black one from his bag. He quickly stuffed the red one in the bag before wrapping the black one around himself. He pulled the hood up over his head so that the moonlight only shone across half of his face. Then grabbing the cauldron he set off into the darkness.
