Finishing her training hadn't been all that easy, starting by trying to read a book of cooking history, at the same time learning to read, and eating (possibly sawdust) bread daily. But after some time, she'd finished the book, only to discover that in order to make soup, one needed not only a cookbook but also a cauldron.

The cauldron, her first one, was of low quality and dubious history. It might have been a pot, and that pot might have been formerly of the chamber.... but many good scrubbings and a whole lot of elbow grease applied on her part, by sheer will and persistance she had removed all the grunge, most of the stains, and almost all the odor.

Her second pot had been made to order, and her cooking had improved vastly. So, now, she felt comfortable to order some pamplets, well, at least one poster to be hung on the tavern wall - hopefully one of the walls that had a bit of illumination. There were great huge areas that were ill lit, even dark, not just the corners.

When she returned home from working, and from attending various duties, she found a few letters had been delivered to her house in her absence. There was a moment of awe and shock, then she realized that these might be merely advertisements, or notes of thanks from her prime pastime of sending birthday greetings to folks. However, as she scanned the return addresses, she didn't recognize the names as being anyone she'd sent a birthday greeting to lately.

Hurrying into the house, and after dumping all her tools and paraphenalia onto the bench by the door, she ran some water and using soap and a scrub brush, she washed her hands, scouring the dirt and some of the skin off her knuckles.

She slows down a moment and then dries her hands, taking a deep breath. Her eyes find the calendar on the wall and she tries to remember if it's election time, and these merely requests for her vote for one or another candidate, or office.

Her chair is thankfully handy as she opens first one, then another, finding them to be requests for soups from her cauldron.

Falling into the chair, she calculates as best she can, the costs of materials, the costs of labor, her time in the kitchen... and comes up with a number. She speeds off letters, and in response to one, she receives an immediate response.... OY!!!! She should have charged more, she learned...

Ahhh.. well... live and learn, right? Life's a bumpy road; too late we find too much that could have helped make it an easier ride.
