Maverick's quest for the Holy Grail Empty Maverick's quest for the Holy Grail

Post by Maverick Tue 2 May 2017 - 2:24

Thirty-one years old with black hair and brown eyes, Maverick wore a tan shirt, black vest and a black hat with a brim.  He is quick with a joke, enjoys games and is usually very observant.

Maverick was a newcomer to town, he had travelled far far from his home due to a misunderstanding involving an ace that had somehow been caught in the fold of his garment. But that wasn't important now, it was time to start a new life, make new friends, maybe a little romance.   He had been here a week now though and had discovered very little to do besides eat, sleep and work.  He liked eating and sleeping, he was good at it, but work was a problem.  Maverick had been born tired and had never got rested.  Work was the bane of his existence and always had been.  Yet each day he trudged to the hospital construction site or one of the farms and worked.  He had developed two blisters, something that he could not ever remember happening in his life.

But a man must have a hope, a dream some kind of aspiration.  Maverick was a seeker,  a seeker after the Holy Grail!  He had heard that the grail had been rumored to exist in this part of the world.  He thought that if he found it he could sell it and become fabulously wealthy.  It was just a matter, he reasoned, of using his God-given gifts in the pursuit.  It might take time, but he had plenty of that.

Having finished work, he stood now leaning against a building alternatively studying the blisters on his hands and the sign that welcomed folks to town.  There was a guard on the road all done up in armor with a halberd and ready to shout 'halt who goes there' or something like that at the drop of a hat.  Maverick didn't like him.

Maverick's quest for the Holy Grail Empty Re: Maverick's quest for the Holy Grail

She'd spent the last several years trying to find her way in this strange new world. Sometimes things felt right, sometimes the world was a little askew, a liitle hazy, out of focus. Sometimes, it was as if there were no straight paths, and in those times, she almost always learned something that it seemed else had long known. She often wondered if anyone understood that, well, that at times it was as if the world suddenly shifted, abandoning the Known for a reality slightly tilted. Like 5 degrees left of center.

Her progress had been sure, at least she hoped, but certainly not certain. She now had in her possession a cauldron. She'd studied and read the entire book, made the cauldron herself, and had made several batches of soup - with a good record: she hadn't burned any buildings down, nor had she burned any soup. Best of all, of all the soups she'd made and either eaten herself or sold, there'd been no reported deaths.

As soon as she'd cooked up more soups and meals than she could eat herself, she was planning to make a circuit and find out how meals and soups sold on other markets.

A whispered gossip challenged her to go to Sarmiz. Maybe they'd enjoy some new culinary delights. Or maybe they'd just be hungry enough to eat whatever they could find on the market.

Maverick's quest for the Holy Grail Empty Re: Maverick's quest for the Holy Grail

Maverick sat with his back to the sign that said 'Welcome to the Grail city of Sarmiz'; most of the time he had his cocked so as to cover his eyes.  He had taken to tossing an occasional pebble at the guard to hear it ring off his armor.  The armor would look around and say something gruff to Maverick, but Maverick pretended to be sleeping.

A cart dashed down the street laden with goods.  "Have you seen the Holy Grail?"  Maverick called out.  The man inside looked like a nobleman and he seemed to be in a terrible hurry.  He either didn't hear Maverick or chose not to respond.  Maverick coughed as the dust from the cart's passage filled his lungs.  He would later find out that it was the mayor absconding with the town's goods.  Maverick's only comment to this was to the guard with the halberd, "Keeping a sharp eye out are you?"

Maverick watched on and it was nearly sunset when another cart with a woman driving it and several kettles in the back.  She would ride a couple hundred yards, then get out and straighten the wheel... ride... straighten.  The axle was broken, but not completely unusable. She seemed to be having an awful time of it.  The guard paid no mind and Maverick was torn. On the one hand he was feeling lazy, on the other hand he was extremely bored.  This looked like a chance to make a friend.  He walked out towards her waving, "Ho there! Need some help?"

Maverick's quest for the Holy Grail Empty Re: Maverick's quest for the Holy Grail

Startled by the voice behind her, she whirls around to find out who is speaking to her. (One would think she's spent too much time alone and/or walking open roads, finding various creatures who all want to kill her.)

She blushes, and tries to swipe sweat from her eyes, as she says, "Aye, sir. It seems I might should have waited a bit longer and looked harder for a better cart. I should know by now, that if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

Looking back at the cart, she sighs. There seems to be a foot movement, as if she began to kick at the wheel, then stopped herself.

She slumps her shoulders. "I suppose I should count myself blessed and fortunate that the thing actually didn't collapse when I went down the big hill back there."

Her frown reaches her eyes and her posture, as she appears discouraged.
