Write a Book

Post by Lord Arogandor on Wed Jan 18, 2017 12:23 pm

Dear Seekers,

Welcome to the first contest of the Grail Lords in 2017!

Grab your pen, and start writing because the Grail Librarian is looking for an new book to add into the library!

The books in the Town Library are written by Seekers and with this contest, we hope to add a new book.
The author of the winning book will not only see his/her piece of work in-game but also will be rewarded with the knowledge of the book itself.

Contest Rules:
- The book must include a title.
- Your final version must be delivered before 8th of February.
- The story can't be larger then 1 normal page (in normal writing).
- The book must have an in-game effect* that can be added by Lord Arogandor.

* Most of the existing books do give a skill bonus on completion, others unlock an ability in-game (like cooking soups or producing wine). Few unpublished books will unlock certain quests. You can design your own in-game effects (both completely new or based on existing effects) but they have to be in harmony with the game as it is. Writing a lovely story giving you +50 on learning is not exactly what I'm looking for.

The Seeker who writes the best story in combination with the book effects will be announced the winner.

Below is an example of one of the Books. You can find more examples at the Town Library.

The tale of Tark and Tork (Title)

written by Meldrak (Author)

Once upon a time, two dwarves lived in the deep caverns of the mountain Argansk. Tork was the elder one and everyone of the tribe admired him for his great strength. Each year during the winter carnival, Tork demonstrated his great strength by lifting up a table full of food with one hand. The younger one, which was called Tark, much admired his brother. But he also envied him. To live in the shadow of your elder brother is hard. Especially if your brother is a dwarf.

One year, during the winter carnival, Tork lifted a table with two pigs, half a cow and twenty breads on it. Everyone in the great hall was in great admiration until someone in the corner of the room shouted: ?Is that all?!?? It was Tark. He was standing before a table, stuffed with three pigs, an entire cow and twenty one breads. All guest held their breath while Tork slowly lifted the table with his right hand, just above his head. The silence in the hall was broken by Tark who shouted ?More pigs!!?

Soon, everyone in the hall was chanting either Tark! Tark! Tark! or Tork! Tork! Tork!. Tark broke Tork his new record by lifting four pigs, one cow and thirty breads. However, Tork broke that record again by adding two grilled chickens to that ... The contest continued until late in the morning later until Tark finally beat his elder brother by lifting five pigs, one cow, forty two breads, five chickens, twenty four apples and one cupcake.

Tork proudly embraced his younger brother and asked: How did you do that? Tark replied: ?Only a dwarf who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach to the bottom of his soul and come up with that extra ounce of power that takes him to win the competition!? (story)

In the example, the reward for reading the book is +2 Strength.

No idea what in-game effect it should have but I thought I'd give it a try.

A warning left forgotten

written by Wanjia
There once were two brothers living in the castle Ardismond. Been born the same time Thomas and Edward were always very competitive over the smallest things. Thomas had always been better than Edward in almost everything and taunted him with this. Their parents didn't mind them competing against each other as it builds character but this was about to change.

Thomas and Edward birthday had just passed and were old enough now where one must learn to defend themselves. As usual this was done by someone appointed by their father the king of castle Ardismond. This man was a close friend of the family and has been a friend for over 20 years. Being young and playful the brothers were given a wooden sword to begin with so they wouldn't get hurt, this to the disappointment of Edward. Edward always wanted to be the great sword master of Ardismond making enemies flee from fear only from hearing his name.

As months had passed the brothers finally switched from the old wooden sticks to sharp steel swords. Father and his friend had always warned them that this is not without danger that they should never fight each other because they are so competitive. Being the playful young adults they were this didn't quite catch on and they decided they needed to know. They needed to know who was the better sword fighter.

They both thought they had trained enough with the stupid old training dummies that they could fight each other. Knowing that their parents and the man wouldn't approve they decided to kept it a secret. The next night Thomas and Edward quietly snuck out the castle and under the bright moonlight they started fighting.

As sparks flew of the swords Thomas managed to cut Edward's arm and of course Thomas laughed at Edward. Thinking he was never going to be the great sword master of Ardismond Edward finally had enough got mad at Thomas and with the fire burning in his eye he stuck back, time after time until faith struck... With eyes wide Thomas was looking at Edward's sword, blood everywhere Thomas dropped to his knees. When Edward had realised what he had done he ran toward his parents' room but when they came back it was already too late... All because of... A warning left forgotten.

Volum XVII of The Witches' Legendary Tales

In a time long forgotten, in a land called Hrabrostia, lived a warrior of great courage. ..no, wait....wrong story…a warrior of great lack of courage. Yes, that’s the one. Tronald was the warrior’s name. So scrawny and puny was he, that he often got beaten by his father’s wooden training dummy when he with much trouble tried to hone his fighting “skills”. After every training session, his father Garold always muttered to himself: “Of all the sons in the world, the gods handed me this brittle twig of an excuse for a son”, followed by heavy sighs and vigorous head shaking.

Every morning Tronald’s father Garold headed into the forest to hunt game. He never brought Tronald along, because he was afraid a Bambi would jump him and beat him up badly. So instead, Tronald spent his time lurking around his two sisters while they were gathering herbs in the Witch’s forest. The witch who lived in this part of the forest had long ago cast a 100-year spell banishing all creatures bigger than rats from the area. Even Tronald felt safe there.

One day while in the Witch’s forest, Tronlad got so occupied with a flower he had never seen that he lost track of his sisters. Tronald was as good with directions as with fighting, and after a few hours of walking aimlessly around, *PHOOF*, the Witch’s Cottage appeared out of thin air right in front of him. Tronald walked straight into the wooden door frame and hit his big toe. He started to cry. Out came the witch! “Who dare disturb me while I am working on this new, incredible Potion of Hideous Prey?” Tronald was petrified and crawled into the cottage and under a table there, where he curled up like a ball. After much cooing and calming down, the witch managed to get him out from under the table. All of a sudden she felt strangely sorry for this incredibly meek creature.

“Lads like you will not last very long without a trick or two up his arms.” she said, and gave him the recipe of the potion she was cooking.  “Cook one cracked squirrel scull with two Foempus eyes, wrap your limbs in four smell seaweed for a week, then add that and two deadly monkshades to the brew. This will make you look so freakishly weird, so outrageously hideous, so smelly and disease-looking that no beast with brains bigger than a walnut will ever sink their teeth into your flesh.”

From that moment on, not a day went by where Tronald didn't drank a pint of potion. The potion's side-effect of excessive flatulence aside, Tronald lived happily ever after, not having to fear Bambi ever again!

Story in flavoured text. When the book is read completely, a new potion will be possible to make (Potion of Hideous Prey). My suggestion for the recipe is 1 squirrel scull, 2 foempus eyes, 4 seaweed and 2 deadly monkshade.
Effect: Maximum enemy level in encounters is lowered by 1 per quality! Or to put it another way: Combat level is decreased by 1 for each potion level. Also, the potion lasts 1 day for each level (just like for Strength potion etc.).  So, with an Expert potion of hideous prey, I will now encounter creatures 3 levels lower than normal, and it will be so for 3 days. The experience gained will however be measured from the real combat level I’m at.

To be able to read the book, one has to complete the Wood for a Witch quest.

Useful for: When you want to gain combat experience, but cannot kill all the hardest beasts you normally would encounter. Or when you want to gain trophies for lower level creatures.

Possible side-effect: People who buys goods from you when you're under the effect of the potion suffers -1 mood due to your stinky potion farts affraid

The Quartermasters Tale
Written by Mikester Brau
The recent strife and uncertain times weighed heavily upon the young adventures brow.   Raids by beasts and men alike threatened the safety and security of our beloved village.   Surviving combat and nearly a years service in the militia brought some wisdom and a few important lesson to be sure.  A good shield goes a long way to making up for poor quality armor and decaying weaponry.   To have a strong arm is good but to have a strong brave heart is better.   Surviving these threats brought trust and fellowship to those who remained and hopefully the villages strong defense would discourage other potentail raids for a time.
The adventure gazed about and then considered the situation and what should be done about it.   But who would listen to one so young and so much less experienced than many of those around them.   Understand; yes that is the key.  We must become our foe and think as our foe to understand what brought them to our village.    It did not take long to understand what it was that made it all so tempting.   We are an attractive target because so much of our wealth and food is so easily spotted.  Everything about this village creates temptation for those who covet what we have.
Well that is certainly the problem.   We unknowingly create such temptation as might be hard to resist.     We do want to turn our fair city into a walled fortress.    The expense would be unbearable and who knows if we might end up building our own prison.    We can not take more people as guard for then who would performs the daily labors needed to feed and fit our citizenry.
The answer has escaped us for too long and a bearable method is something we can easily employ.   We need to protect and hide our food and wealth.   Perhaps a warehouse or perhaps something less obvious.  I know my calling now and I know what must be done.   I must become the Quartermaster and bravely put my name forth for the town to trust and follow on a quest to secure what we have labored for.

(Reading this book could add to the labor skill or Mercantile skill if accepted)

Well hopefully this is not too bad and might entertain someone.

The Way of the Warrior
By: Cpt. Alphonso Coot III

The true warrior is not one who abides by the principals of lesser fated men.  To brawl in a tavern or smash wild beasts one requires little. A true warrior on the battlefield however, must embrace every instinct for good or evil within them and unleash it to a singular goal -- Victory.

To become the warrior you must remember that all of life has two sides.  You must embrace your viciousness to protect those you love, you must embrace your savagery to protect civilization.  This duality is your greatest ally on the battlefield.  Your heart and mind allow you to temper the beast within you to make sharp decisions  with amazing strength and stamina.

Your insight is rooted to the ground.  You think always in terms of your contact with the earth.  You shall always watch your terrain and anticipate it before your foot hits.  If you slip and fall, the enemy shall not care what a legendary fighter you are when they descend on you.  Your first analysis of any battlefield should be the lay, texture, and composure of the ground on which it is being fought.  Better to stand in place or retreat in favor of another day than letting the earth give you disadvantage leading to defeat.
Quick strategic facts:
-"Your flank" refers to your rear.  Yes, just like a horse.
-Ordering arrows to be shot while your own fighters are on the field is highly frowned upon.
-If the decision is "left" or "right", the correct answer will be "left" 63% of the time.

Your endurance is rooted to your instincts.  You are fighting for survival, always remember that.  Often in war you are fighting for much more.  Bring your survival instinct to the forefront when wounded.  Do not trust hate, it is a poor medic.  Survival is constant, survival is innate.  Remember that you will go on because you must, trust in yourself and remember you will succeed.
Quick survival facts:
-Water should not be drank from standing sources if the quality is unknown.  See what other animals drink from it, and always always always check the color.
-If any part of your body turns green at any time, it is serious.  See a doctor.
-Do not sleep underneath trees to seek shelter from a thunderstorm.

More to come in my next book, "Can I eat that?"

(Increases the constitution skill with 1 point, and grants a combat skill point.)

PS(If the combat skill point is not possible, +1 constitution +1 agility)

Dear Seekers,

Thank you all for your participation with this contest!

It will take some time to decide if we'll announce one or multiple winners! There is more then just one book that could be added into the Library!
As a token of our gratitude all participants received a Master Stamina Potion for their efforts.

Re: Write a Book

Post by Terrai on Tue Mar 28, 2017 10:57 pm

So I know I arrived in the realm too late for this one, but it sounded fun so I wrote a story as well.  I know it's not eligible for a prize, but you're welcome to use this in game if you'd like to.

Title: Tad's Scalding Stew
Written by Terrai

With his arms full of ingredients, Tad arrived at his house on the outskirts of town.  Rose was coming over for dinner, and Tad had spared no expense!  He had meat, mushrooms, milk, and cheese, along with all the right herbs to spice up a stew.  The aroma rising from the cauldron became more and more potent, and he imagined the smile of surprise on Rose’s face.

A knock on the door - she was early!  He opened the door, only to be met by three barbarians!  The biggest brute raised his cutlass, then paused and sniffed.  Holding the blade to Tad’s throat, he pointed to the cauldron, then patted his belly.

Tad nodded, gingerly scooping his special stew into the barbarians’ bowls.  Inwardly he fumed.  Tonight was going to be perfect!  Just him and his Rose, enjoying a romantic meal.  But now these buffoons were slurping his stew away!  Half of the stew was being wasted too, running down the barbarians’ beards.  Worse yet, Rose might walk in any minute!

Inwardly incensed, he filled a skillet with the steaming liquid.  Eyebrows raised in innocence, he walked toward the table.  Splash!  The scalding stew blinded the unsuspecting barbarians.  Whack!  Bonk!  Pow!  The three bullies fell asleep as the skillet met their noggins.

“What’s all the noise?” asked Rose, walking in with a sweet and oblivious smile.  “Barbarians, oh my!  Tad, you’re so brave!”  As Tad tied up the sleepers, he noticed a coin purse, with bronze, silver and… could that be gold?  What a fortune!

Rose breathed in deeply, distracted by Tad’s dinner.  “Is there any left?”  As Tad poured a bowl of stew for Rose, he shook his head in awe.  Somehow, today was turning out even better than he imagined, thanks to his cooking skills, and just a little luck.

+1 Cooking
+1 Luck

Dear Seekers,

My apologizes for the huge delay. I did take some time to decide indeed.
In my defense it was not an easy choice to be made neither, as each book was worth to be added.

I decided to add two books from the competition and thus declare both Cpt_Coot as AxineeHearth the winners of this competition. Once the books are added, you will receive the knowledge of the book you wrote.
